Volunteer Organizations

An essential feature of the Interstate Scholars program is the volunteer experience. Scholars will learn about difficulties faced by their host community, and they will help, side by side with residents. They will experience how positive progress can be made, even on problems that seem insurmountable, when a determined cooperative effort is made.

Why Participate?

Spread the word about your work! Gain the help of a dozen passionate young leaders! These scholars are all students who want to do good in the world, and learn how to solve problems in compassionate, sustainable ways. Show them new ways to help communities and they will carry the effort forwards.

What is Involved?

Scholars visiting from out-of-state will learn about the difficulties your organization addresses; they will spend the Thursday and Friday of their spring break assisting you in your efforts. The specific activities of the scholars will be arranged in advance through discussion between Interstate Scholars and your organization; scholars should not work unsupervised or alone, and their work should be reasonably safe. Volunteer staff or Interstate Scholars staff will ensure students check in and check out at the beginning and end of each day. Your organization will not be required to provide transportation for scholars, unless their work requires moving from site to site.
